A Papillion woman suffered multiple injuries Thursday night when a Metro bus hit her while she crossed the street in downtown Omaha.

Patricia McGuire, 62, suffered a skull fracture, hand fracture, and a broken rib from the accident at 13th and Dodge.

Police say McGuire was crossing Dodge in the crosswalk when the bus turned left from 13th Street onto Dodge and struck her.

Investigators said McGuire’s injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

There was no immediate word on whether the bus driver would be cited.

The law firm of High & Younes frequently handles accidents involving large trucks and buses as well as vehicle on pedestrian accidents. Each of these types of accidents on their own can be devastating and cause severe life long injuries and death; but combined, such as in this case, where a bus hit a pedestrian the accidents are as fatal as they can be.

The mechanism of injury when pedestrian is hit by a vehicle is dramatic blunt force trauma. A pedestrian is especially susceptible to injury from both being hit by the vehicle and slamming against the ground due to their vulnerability, lack of protection, and size disparity between a person and a vehicle of any type. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association produced a report which found that nearly 6,000 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2017. Nebraska ranked last in pedestrian fatalities rate per 100,000 people in 2016 with just .68, well below the U.S. Average of 1.92.

Nebraska law is very clear that a pedestrian has the right of way when crossing in a cross walk with a traffic control signal giving them the cross sign such as was the case with Ms. McGuire. Sec. 60-153.

Fortunately, Ms. McGuire is not facing life threatening injuries, however her life will likely be changed forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. McGuire and her family.

Please everyone, drivers and pedestrians, remember to slow down, pay attention and keep a look out. Hopefully we can all prevent accidents like this from happening if we drive responsibly.
