Yesterday was Memorial Day 2019 a day of remembrance, honor and celebration of the lives of those men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. For many people this time of year and many of the summer holidays are also a time to gather with friends and family, often times they consume alcohol. Unfortunately, this leads to an uptick in car accidents, truck accidents, and traffic related injuries and deaths and it is important to remember to act responsibly.
Sunday night a car crash occurred on U.S. Highway 75 in Cass County, Nebraska near Beaver lake resulting in the deaths of four people died on impact: Walter Guy Minshall, 57, of Omaha (the driver of the Dodge Caravan); Brenda Sue Minshall, 49 of Madison (front passenger in the Caravan); Constance Joann Gillot, 53 of Plattsmouth (rear passenger of the Caravan); and Taylor E. Grasewicz, 20, of Beaver Lake (the driver of the Ford Mustang) who graduated from Conestoga High School with honors in 2016. Also, three other passengers of the Ford Mustang were injured, the severity of which is unknown. This horrible and sad event touched the lives of countless people, not only the victims of the accident but also their friends and family who will now remember this weekend not only for what it stands but also for the loss of their loved ones.
The accident occurred when a 2000 Dodge Caravan turned onto Highway 75 and proceeded to drive in on the wrong side of the road causing a head on collision with a 2013 Ford Mustang. The details of the accident were published by the Omaha World Herald online at https://www.omaha.com/news/nebraska/four-dead-in-two-vehicle-head-on-crash-south-of/article_9830ce33-cc3c-56d5-98d8-5382142ef220.html
The Cass County Sheriff, Nebraska State Patrol, Murray Fire and Rescue, Plattsmouth Fire and EMS, and Cass County Paramedics responded to the scene of the fatal car accident. It is being investigated as to whether alcohol played a part in this accident for which autopsies have been ordered to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor in this accident. In 2018 Nebraska experienced 230 traffic fatalities, 92 of which occurred on rural highways such as U.S. Highway 75 where this accident took place. According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office alcohol related fatalities typically are 30% to 40% of all accident related fatalities over the past decade.
